FAA AWARDS GRANT TO GCR TO COLLECT AND MAINTAIN SAFETY DATA AT THOUSANDS
OF PUBLIC-USE AIRPORTS NATIONWIDE
New Orleans-based GCR & Associates Inc. has been awarded a grant
by the Federal Aviation Administration to oversee the collection of
important airport safety and maintenance data at approximately five
thousand airports in the United States.
The grant authorizes GCR to spearhead the collection and compilation
of extensive safety data relating to issues such as runway lengths,
approach standards, NAVAIDS, and a myriad of facility and operational
data. The information is crucial for those in the aviation industry
that are in need of the most current and accurate data on airport facilities.
The grant applies to all public-use, general aviation airports in North
America.
The data is collected in each state by certified inspectors who then
enter the information into a secure online database at www.5010web.com,
a site which was originally designed and is currently hosted by GCR.
The data is transmitted to the FAA’s National Flight Data Center
at their headquarters in Washington, D.C. where it becomes part of FAA’s
5010 Airport Master Record. The FAA uses this data to bi-monthly publish
their Facility Directory (Flight Information Publication Airport/Facility
Directory).
GCR subcontracted with Southern Illinois University Carbondale to assist
in the coordination and administration of the inspection effort. All
inspections are conducted by representatives of the state aeronautics
departments who are reimbursed with funds from the FAA grant. All accounting
and administration efforts are coordinated through the secure 5010web.com
website.
"
This FAA grant assures that critical airport data is updated and available
at all times to those who need it,” said Mike Flores, president
of GCR. “The 5010 program has struggled in the past with the time
delay of moving information from the inspection in the field to entry
of the data into the National Flight Data Center’s database for
production of the Flight Directories. By automating the process, we
have been able to streamline both the safety inspection process and
the administrative tasks associated with the inspection effort."
The grant was executed on July 26th, 2004 and the first round of airport
inspections are now being completed utilizing the GCR program.
