CASE STUDY

Mississippi Birth Defects Registry

The Birth Defect Registry System (BDRS) is an application created to meet the specific needs of the Genetics Office in the Mississippi State Department of Health’s Bureau of Child and Adolescent Health (Genetics). The application stores the information on children reported by hospitals, physicians and others, who have been diagnosed with at least one of the +1700 ICD-9 codes specified by Genetics.

BDRS provides staff members with a user friendly interface that does not require prior computer experience to use the system. Each diagnosis code is individually verified or refuted by MSDH staff and Cases are ‘Closed’ after the statuses of all ICD-9’s have been resolved. In order to ‘Close’ a case with confirmed birth defect diagnosis, the county of birth and the mother’s age must be entered in the system. BDRS provides various tools to assist staff with the research needed to obtain this information that is vital for the study of birth defects. GCR continues to partner with MSDH to develop tools to increase efficiency, the accuracy of the data, and to increase participation of the Mississippi hospitals.
